Obama Turns His Back On Silicon Valley - Business Insider

During the 2012 presidential campaign, Silicon Valley tech businesses overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama with their dollars.

Here's a table, from Nate Silver:

Silicon Valley donations to presidential campaigns

Then, during election day, Obama won the Bay Area with an epic 49 point margin.

Here's another Silver chart:

Silicon Valley Voters

So, you'd think that these companies (and the voters who work for them) would have the newly re-elected Obama administration's ear, right?

Maybe not.

In mid-September, dozens of tech companies, including Apple, Cisco, Microsoft, and Xerox, signed a letter asking Congress and the President to pass a bill called the?STEM Jobs Act of 2012.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math.?The purpose of the bill is to increase the number of visas available by up to 55,000?for immigrants with advanced degrees in those fields.

Yesterday, President Obama put out a statement saying he will not support the bill.

The reason: In exchange for making thousands of new visas available to STEM workers, the STEM Act abolishes another visa program, called the "Diversity Visa" program, which distributes 50,000 visas through a lottery to a pool of nearly 15 million applicants with high school degrees.

The Diversity Visa program drives some people completely bonkers.

Yale law school professor Peter Schuck, who describes himself as "militantly moderate," is one such person.

In a 2011 op-ed for the Los Angeles Times, he called for a swap similar to the one proposed in the STEM Act.

First Schuck mocks the program for its lottery process, which, in 2011, resulted in 50,000 people being told they got visas when in fact they had not.

Then he hits a bigger point, arguing that the Diversity Visa program "imposes a cost ? an opportunity cost."

"The fact that some of the 50,000 lottery winners will turn out to be desirable immigrants is an accident, not a policy."

"The solution is straightforward: Abolish the program and use those 50,000 visas (or more) to promote carefully defined national interests, particularly in more high-skilled immigrants who, many studies show, produce jobs, innovation and new businesses."

Indeed, there is plenty of evidence that highly-skilled immigrants contribute heavily to Silicon Valley.

Check out this chart from Vivek Wadhwa at Duke University, showing that 52.4 percent of Silicon Valley firms are founded by immigrants:

Silicon Valley immigrants

Obama's White House won't have it.?

In a statement, the administration says it "strongly supports legislation to attract and retain foreign students who graduate with advanced STEM degrees" but that it "does not support narrowly tailored proposals that do not meet the President's long-term objectives with respect to comprehensive immigration reform."

A roundup of the best photos of the day

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, has suffered a stroke but is OK and resting in a Las Vegas hospital, a family friend said on Thursday. "He was doing well and says he's feeling OK," close family friend Brian Oxman told Reuters. Oxman, Michael Jackson's one-time attorney, said the 83-year-old patriarch of the pop music family started experiencing weakness on Wednesday while walking in a park near his home and was later admitted to a hospital. Jackson has a history of strokes, Oxman said. "He was talking fine," Oxman added. "He sounded excellent to me." A former ...

Should I invest in 401K or in the stock market? ? Roth IRA News

Well it depends on your age and your location and I guess we gould add in your life-style.

If your company as any type of match with your 401K, it would be silly not to fill it up to the point of them matching. SO if they match 25% up to $3,000, at least put in $3,000 because if you don?t, you are leaving $750 on the table.

It also depends on your income and any other factors [IE children, kids college, health issues etc. etc.]

You can?t save enough and when you retire, don?t think you are going to get a nickle from the government if you are in your 20?s. IF somehow Social Security turns itself around [highly unlikely] it will be all gravy and an added bonus. Do not depend on this for a source of income when we are all in our 80?s eating cat food.

When you talk about putting money into the stock market and a 401K, they are in essence, the same thing. I don?t know the exact choices you have with your 401K or what company you are working with so its tough to pinpoint exact funds. Typically if you are 20-something, take some risks inside the 401K. Put 75% or more into the stock market.

I would recommend setting up a brokerage account away from your 401K with a sharebuilder.com or scottrade.com if you have specific stocks or ETF?s you would like to buy into away from your 401K.

And again, depending on the person, I would also recommend setting up a Roth IRA if you meet the requirements. That money goes into the account taxed and will grow tax-free with pretty soft penalties for early withdrawal, NOT that you want to do that.

Also, save to buy a house/condo. Its a decent time to get something with the market being over-saturated with listings.

Mountain bike group takes aim at Tester's FJRA

Postby mtbgreg1 ? Tue Nov 27, 2012 2:03 pm

In August 2009, the Montana Mountain Bike Alliance hosted its second annual backcountry festival in the tiny town of Lima, population 250. Roughly 150 cyclists from across the region showed up to trek along singletrack in the Lima Peaks by day and party by night. The MMBA brought in a band. Bikers sponsored a spaghetti dinner, even rented local buses for shuttles. All told, the event raised nearly $1,000 for Lima?s assisted living center. Locals thanked the MMBA for the biggest economic boost in Lima in a decade.

Bob Allen, MMBA?s co-president, told the story to members of the Blackfoot Challenge during a recent meeting at the Lubrecht forestry center. It?s a prime example, he said, of the kind of contribution mountain bikers bring to small communities in Montana. It?s also a prime example of why the MMBA wants to see a portion of the Scapegoat wilderness addition boundary contained in Sen. Jon Tester?s Forest Jobs and Recreation Act altered. Mountain bikers have lost access to hundreds of miles of trails across Montana and Idaho in recent years, partly due to a new Forest Service philosophy banning bicycles in certain areas that could theoretically be designated wilderness. Allen is drawing the line in the Scapegoat.

Economist's View: Fed Watch: Meanwhile, in Japan...

Tim Duy:

Meanwhile, in Japan..., by Tim Duy: Back in September, I wrote:

What I expect to happen is this: The Bank of Japan will be forced into outright monetization at some point; a soft default in the form of higher inflation will occur. And dramatically higher inflation, I fear. Japan has not had inflation for two decades. I suspect they will experience all that pent-up inflation in the scope of a couple of years.

Sure enough, the battle begins. Almost lost in the holiday weekend, from Reuters last week:

Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said on Wednesday that on its return to power it would set a 2 percent inflation target with an eye to revising the law governing the Bank of Japan so as to boost cooperation between the government and the central bank...

...In its campaign platform unveiled on Wednesday, the LDP called for bold monetary easing through cooperation between the government and the central bank on debt management, but it made no mention of Abe's calls for the BOJ to buy debt to finance infrastructure projects.

The response from the Bank of Japan was swift:

But BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa dismissed many of Abe's proposals, including the possible revision of the Bank of Japan law, a step critics say is aimed at clipping the central bank's independence and forcing it to print money to finance public debt that is already double the size of Japan's economy.

"Central bank independence is a system created upon bitter lessons learned from the long economic and financial history in Japan and overseas countries," Shirakawa told a news conference....

...Shirakawa was adamant the central bank would not directly underwrite government debt because bond yields would spike and hurt the economy.

"No advanced country has adopted such a policy," he said.

Shirakawa is correct. Modern central banks may have lost some control over inflation at times, but I don't think any has engaged in outright monetization of government debt. Yet despite Shirakawa's insistence to the contrary, I still think that is exactly where Japan is headed. More central bank history in the making.

Hump Day Hero: Molly Adler - The Center for Sexual Pleasure and ...

1. What do you do in the field of sexuality?

I am a Sexuality Educator and the co-owner of Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center in Albuquerque, NM.

2. Where are you based out of?

Albuquerque, NM

3. What is your focus? What do you do?

About six years ago, along with my business partner Matie Fricker, I opened Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center, the Southwest?s first safe, sex-positive, healthy space for adults to learn about sexuality. The center has established a much-needed community center for women, LGBT folks, kinksters, polyamorous families, new parents, and all adults in Albuquerque. We have a brick & mortar shop where adults can find all things pleasure related, from gourmet chocolate to gourmet sex toys. We answer questions, help people find resources and offer sex and relationship classes throughout the year.

We also run an online store at www.selfservetoys.com

4. What are your particular goals and passions in the field?

I am passionate about helping people have a stronger, healthier body image, better communication in their relationships, and for folks to find new ways to experience pleasure. I truly believe a sex positive approach to relationships and one?s sexuality will lead to a happier life.

I am currently pursuing my MSW, and hope to do more one-on-one counseling in the future. I also offer trainings for health professionals on sexual cultural competency.

5. Why did you choose to work in this field?

Sex is everywhere, and yet access to accurate and honest information, and products for promoting healthy sexuality is limited. At Self Serve, we offer a healthy alternative to the way we ?consume? sexuality information in our culture. This sex-positive approach was, and still is in many ways, radical: It posits that sex is healthy, and pleasure is good for you. Sex-positive spaces like Self Serve encourage each person to find accurate sexual health information, define his or her own sexual identity, and choose relationships without judgment. Like the sign at the front of our space says, Self Serve is for everyone.

I am passionate about spaces like Self Serve existing, someday I hope in most cities and towns. People deserve a space to ask questions, find resources and find toys and treats that help them feel more joy and pleasure. In our society, most people only find sex information (in a very limited way) through peers, medical professionals and the internet. Folks have few resources they can trust, and I?m proud Self Serve offers that safe space.

6. Where did you go for school/training?

I graduated with a BA cum laude from George Washington University in Washington, DC. I majored in Psychology and Women?s Studies. The human mind, gender and identities are all tied to sexuality and our everyday experience.

I learned many valuable lessons working for Grand Opening in Boston, MA from 2003-2005. I discovered how much I loved working in a women-run sex shop. Much of my formative learning was passed down from other sex educators I worked with. During my time there I was lucky to learn on the job as well as attend trainings in safer sex and public health.

I am currently pursuing a Masters in Social Work. I plan to pursue more sexuality training, as well.

7. Do you have any literature out (websites, articles)?

I am proud of the website, blog and videos we?ve created through Self Serve:
selfservetoys.com
self serve on youtube

8. What would you recommend to future professionals attempting to get into the field?

Figure out in what context you get excited about the work. Do you love counseling individuals? Do you like talking to a big group? Work with different populations (older women, gay men, leather folk, transgender people, survivors of sexual assault, etc) and see who you?re most interested in working with. You can definitely talk to everyone about sex, but sometimes we feel most excited about a certain group or experience, or benefit from working in the communities we?re part of.

Consider whether an institution like a University or Non-Profit is right for you, or if you?d rather carve your own path. I am personally inspired by how many great Sex Educators, Performers and Writers are starting their own business, website, movement or educational forum.

9. What is the most challenging aspect for you working in this career?

One of the toughest challenges can be the most liberating: there aren?t a wide range of ready-to-wear jobs in sexuality. One reason so many Sexuality Educators are entrepreneurs is because they have to be in order to realize their dreams. It is still challenging to fight for the importance and legitimacy of Self Serve and sex ed with a predominantly sex negative public.

One defining moment I recall with pride is when Matie and I won the Tough Cookie Awards in 2008 from NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners, Northern New Mexico).

The Tough Cookie Award was recognition of all we?ve accomplished in starting and growing our business, despite the obstacles. We told the awards committee of the discrimination against our business: in funding, finding retail space and zoning regulations. We live in a society that writes off all sex-related businesses as prurient, harmful and unsafe. We were told SBA funding is off-limits to us, we learned how zoning would limit how we merchandise every square foot of our store, and landlords rejected us when we sought retail space. I see myself as a culture-shifter, hoping our world will relax and become more positive in attitudes around sex, relationships and body image. The process in which we help make that shift involves a lot of uphill battles. I am very proud of the moment we won the Tough Cookie awards, and I?m proud of the business organization NAWBO for publicly valuing the work we do.

10. One must read-what would you recommend? Why?

My favorite sex book varies day to day, but lately I find myself recommending Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel a lot. I love how she breaks down the unhealthy way we typically view long term relationships in our culture, and introduces a more playful, creative, erotic view. The subtitle is ?unlocking erotic intelligence? which I think is aptly titled. Many women, men and couples in American society lack a critical understanding of co-dependence and interpersonal relationships. Perel?s book provides a new outlook that is freeing and positive.

Hugo Chavez heading to Cuba for more treatment

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced plans to travel to Cuba as early as Tuesday for more medical treatment after spending much of the past 18 months fighting cancer.

In a written request to the legislature, Chavez said doctors have recommended he "begin special treatment consisting of various sessions of hyperbaric oxygenation" and physical therapy to continue "consolidating the process of strengthening health."

The request did not provide more details about the treatment or Chavez's condition and was promptly approved by allied lawmakers at a special session in the city of Maracay. National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello read the request on television.

It said Chavez would travel to Cuba as soon as Tuesday. It did not say how long he will stay, though it said he would be back by Jan. 10, when he is being sworn in for a fourth term. Venezuelan law requires presidents to receive legislative approval before leaving the country for extended periods.

The treatment that Chavez is to undergo generally involves breathing pure oxygen while in a pressurized, sealed chamber. Its value is well-established for treating burns, carbon monoxide poisoning and some other medical conditions, and to aid wound healing and help repair bone and tissue damaged by radiation treatments.

However, the American Cancer Society says there is no evidence the treatment can cure cancer.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is employed by doctors in Cuba for the rehabilitation of patients with chronic illnesses, said Jesus Pena, a Venezuelan internist with a private practice in Caracas. But Pena said the announcement after a period of silence about Chavez's condition raises suspicions about the reasons behind the treatment.

The 58-year-old president first underwent cancer treatment in Cuba in June 2011 and suffered a relapse in February. He has since said he's recovered from the pelvic cancer and won re-election in October.

Throughout his previous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Chavez kept many details of his illness secret, including the type of cancer and the precise location of the tumors.

Opposition lawmaker Alfonso Marquina expressed concern about what he said seems to be a "veiled or deliberate attempt to continue creating uncertainty."

Marquina told The Associated Press in a phone interview that if Chavez is traveling to Cuba for normal medical treatment as his request says, "the correct thing to do would be for a much more precise medical report to be given, and to not continue on with this sort of permanent uncertainty."

Dr. Michael Pishvaian, an oncologist at Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in the United States, said several of his patients have received hyperbaric oxygen treatment, usually to promote the healing of wounds or damage to nerves and muscles that can be caused by radiation therapy. Pishvaian said such cases are unusual.

"These are definitely cases that the patients are really suffering from the side effects ... of the radiation therapy, and we don't know how to help them and hyperbaric oxygen is kind of something we reach for as a last resort," Pishvaian said.

He said that while it's unclear why Chavez is having the treatment, "it may be promoting wound healing if there's something about the surgical site or his prior radiation sites that aren't healing well."

Chavez last appeared publicly during a televised meeting on Nov. 15, prompting some critics to publicly wonder where he went after his election win.

Chavez was absent on Tuesday from a military air show in Maracay where some Venezuelans had speculated he could reappear.

Before the announcement of Chavez's plans to return to Cuba, opposition newspaper editor Teodoro Petkoff published an editorial in the daily Tal Cual on Tuesday criticizing the president's long absence from the public eye.

Under the headline "The invisible man," Petkoff said: "The health of those who govern can't be a secret."

Favorite Holiday Movie: ?A Christmas Story? because it?s just positive, optimistic. It gives you hope and makes you go in the right state of mind.

Holiday Viewing Traditions: I?ll do the ?Dick Clark [New Year's Eve] Special? definitely. To be honest, I always have a gift to get at the last minute. I usually have the big presents but I need to stuff the stockings and get the little ones so that happens on Christmas Day.

Holiday Family Traditions: I?m usually with my family and friends. My mom always does a Christmas tree?always! And every year since we came to the States, she would buy a little house or a church or a village to put underneath the tree. We?ve been in the States since 1993 and now it?s like a mini country there that takes up half the living room. Every year she adds one more and they?re pretty intricate. Some of them have slides and train stations. I love that stuff. My dad is Jewish so I also enjoy a Hanukkah bush decorated in blue. We spend time making breakfast. Usually, it?s difficult for me not to give the gifts earlier because I love watching my family and my friends open the boxes and say, this is so awesome. But for the most part, I wait and we open the presents.

EMMITT SMITH:
Favorite Holiday Movie: ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.? I just love it because here you have an odd ball reindeer that nobody really wants to play with, which is like life sometimes. And now this reindeer has something to offer in order to make the world better. That?s a wonderful thing! It?s the original story about bullying.

TONY DOVOLANI:
Favorite Holiday Movie: ?Home Alone.? It was the first Christmas film I saw when I came to the United States and I laughed so hard.

Holiday Viewing Traditions: When we do have the television on we watch a lot of Disney films and Christmas themed cartoons ? like ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.?

This Year?s Holiday Plans: I will be spending the holidays at home with family and friends ? sharing time and catching up with everyone ? since I have been away for the past 4 months in LA for ?DWTS.?

Business Security Tips for the Holidays - Business Review USA

In the run up to Christmas, businesses need to ensure that they have checked their list twice when it comes to IT security. Not only do employees browse for Christmas gifts online during their lunch breaks, but an increasing number of people work remotely over the festive period. Employees can unknowingly put their business at risk from the inside by inadvertently opening the door to a virus or spyware, which can have devastating consequences to a business and its customers.

1. ? ?Shop around

Whatever the size of your business; you don?t have to plunder the Christmas party fund to afford proper protection during the festive season. Smaller businesses can be an easy target because they are less likely to invest in the most expensive corporate solutions. However, there are plenty of cost effective options to be had for the savvy shopper. Look for reputable antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-spam packages that will block hackers when installed across all corporate devices. Of course, the best and most cost effective option is to have security built into your network if you want to stop cyber-attacks at the source.

?

?

2. ? ?Consider the cloud

Father Christmas isn?t the only one who can travel around the world at the speed of light. The cloud has made storing data and accessing Apps from anywhere much easier. Partnering with a cloud provider whose service is optimised for high security standards can strengthen the safety net around your data. However, make sure you take control of your data in the cloud by choosing a trusted provider who is open with you about where your data is held and how this may change. Ensure that you can decide where your data is stored and how it is moved, and choose a provider who will offer you a robust SLA and has a proven track record.

?

?

3. ? ?Education is the perfect gift

Enforce a thorough internet security policy for employees that covers threat management across PC, mobile and social media activity. It is imperative that employees understand the risk that cybercrime poses and the costly consequences of a breach during the Christmas period, in order to motivate adherence to the guidelines you provide.?

?

?

4. ? ?Take responsibility

It may sound simple, but ensure that someone within your organisation is taking responsibility for monitoring the current security threats. Patching software and making staff aware of the latest scams will ensure that full protection is maintained and no chinks in your security armour go unnoticed.

?

5. ? ?Stay one step ahead of BYOD

Whilst, of course, it is essential to implement adequate protection at the business edge, it is equally important to ensure that employees aren?t unwittingly putting the business at risk. Research earlier this year revealed that nearly one in two small businesses have experienced a security breach caused by staff. With the growing popularity of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), employees intending to take new gadgets from their Christmas stockings into the corporate environment need guidance on how to do this without compromising business security. ? ? ?

?

6. ? ?Protection for remote workers?

The same security rules apply for all employees, whatever their working environment this Christmas. Make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect staff that are accessing the corporate network and applications outside the office. Working smarter and more securely on the move requires the likes of endpoint protection, along with a closely maintained corporate data usage policy.?

Egypt's Mursi to meet senior judges over power grab

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi will meet senior judges on Monday to try to ease a crisis over his seizure of new powers which has set off violent protests reminiscent of last year's revolution which brought him to power.

Egypt's stock market plunged on Sunday in its first day open since Mursi issued a decree late on Thursday temporarily widening his powers and shielding his decisions from judicial review, drawing accusations he was behaving like a new dictator.

More than 500 people have been injured in clashes between police and protesters worried Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood aims to dominate the post-Hosni Mubarak era after winning Egypt's first democratic parliamentary and presidential elections this year.

One Muslim Brotherhood member was killed and 60 people were hurt on Sunday in an attack on the main office of the Brotherhood in the Egyptian Nile Delta town of Damanhour, the website of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said.

Egypt's highest judicial authority hinted at compromise to avert a further escalation, though Mursi's opponents want nothing less than the complete cancellation of a decree they see as a danger to democracy.

The Supreme Judicial Council said Mursi's decree should apply only to "sovereign matters", suggesting it did not reject the declaration outright, and called on judges and prosecutors, some of whom began a strike on Sunday, to return to work.

Mursi would meet the council on Monday, state media said.

Mursi's office repeated assurances that the measures would be temporary, and said he wanted dialogue with political groups to find "common ground" over what should go in Egypt's constitution, one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

Hassan Nafaa, a professor of political science at Cairo University, saw an effort by the presidency and judiciary to resolve the crisis, but added their statements were "vague". "The situation is heading towards more trouble," he said.

Sunday's stock market fall of nearly 10 percent - halted only by automatic curbs - was the worst since the uprising that toppled Mubarak in February, 2011.

Images of protesters clashing with riot police and tear gas wafting through Cairo's Tahrir Square were an unsettling reminder of that uprising. Activists were camped in the square for a third day, blocking traffic with makeshift barricades. Nearby, riot police and protesters clashed intermittently.

"BACK TO SQUARE ONE"

Mursi's supporters and opponents plan big demonstrations on Tuesday that could be a trigger for more street violence.

"We are back to square one, politically, socially," said Mohamed Radwan of Pharos Securities, an Egyptian brokerage firm.

Mursi's decree marks an effort to consolidate his influence after he successfully sidelined Mubarak-era generals in August. It reflects his suspicions of a judiciary little reformed since the Mubarak era.

Issued just a day after Mursi received glowing tributes from Washington for his work brokering a deal to end eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas, the decree drew warnings from the West to uphold democracy. Washington has leverage because of billions of dollars it sends in annual military aid.

"The United States should be saying this is unacceptable," former presidential nominee John McCain, leading Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on Fox News.

"We thank Mr. Mursi for his efforts in brokering the ceasefire with Hamas ... But this is not what the United States of America's taxpayers expect. Our dollars will be directly related to progress toward democracy."

The Mursi administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms that will complete Egypt's democratic transformation. Yet leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

"There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says 'let us split the difference'," prominent opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said on Saturday.

WARNINGS FROM WEST

Investors had grown more confident in recent months that a legitimately elected government would help Egypt put its economic and political problems behind it. The stock market's main index had risen 35 percent since Mursi's victory. It closed on Sunday at its lowest level since July 31.

Political turmoil also raised the cost of government borrowing at a treasury bill auction on Sunday.

"Investors know that Mursi's decisions will not be accepted and that there will be clashes on the street," said Osama Mourad of Arab Financial Brokerage.

Just last week, investor confidence was helped by a preliminary agreement with the International Monetary Fund over a $4.8 billion loan needed to shore up state finances.

Mursi's decree removes judicial review of decisions he takes until a new parliament is elected, expected early next year.

It also shields the Islamist-dominated assembly writing Egypt's new constitution from a raft of legal challenges that have threatened it with dissolution, and offers the same protection to the Islamist-controlled upper house of parliament.

"I am really afraid that the two camps are paving the way for violence," said Nafaa. "Mursi has misjudged this, very much so. But forcing him again to relinquish what he has done will appear a defeat."

Many of Mursi's political opponents share the view that Egypt's judiciary needs reform, though they disagree with his methods. Mursi's new powers allowed him to sack the prosecutor general who took his job during the Mubarak era and is unpopular among reformists of all stripes.

Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2012: Wrap Up, Highlights and - Twitch

The 4th Doha Tribeca Film Festival wrapped up proceedings on Saturday night, bringing to end an enthralling eight day celebration of World Cinema, including an impressive selection of films from the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region, and a glimpse at the burgeoning industry that is sparking into life in Qatar. Twitch was in attendance for the second half of the festival, where I was able to sample of variety of feature films, shorts and documentaries from around the region, as well as savour the unique delights of Doha itself.

Launched in 2009, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival is building some serious momentum in the city, screening more than 80 feature films from all over the world, to a local audience largely unfamiliar with cinema beyond Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters. The centrepiece of the fledgling Doha Film Institute's calendar of events to promote cinematic interest and artistry in Qatar, the DTFF programme can already stand proudly alongside many major international film festivals.?

This year's festival opened with Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which examines the growing East/West cultural divide post-9/11, while the festival wrapped up on a lighter note, with the ambitious 3D animated family film, Rise of the Guardians. The Contemporary World Cinema programme for 2012 included new works from renowned filmmakers such as Ken Loach (The Angel's Share), Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) and Matteo Garrone (Reality), alongside special screenings of top tier commercial selections including Ben Affleck's much-lauded Argo, Martin McDonaugh's Seven Psychopaths, Yash Chopra's triumphant return to filmmaking, Till I Breathe This Life, and David O' Russell's awards favourite, Silver Linings Playbook.?

Younger cinephiles were not to be left out either, with a considerable amount of the festival's energies going into all-day family events stationed along the gorgeous Katara Cultural Village beachfront. Events ranged from workshops and competitions to free outdoor screenings of undisputed world cinema classics, including Miyazaki Hayao's My Neighbour Totoro, Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso and Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

My attentions fell primarily on the Arab Film Competition titles, which comprised of seven narrative features, seven documentaries and thirteen shorts. Not unexpectedly, the themes of these films fell almost entirely into the familiar categories of the Arab Spring, which has swept across the MENA region since December 2010, as well as religious fundamentalism, gender inequality and illegal immigration. Particular highlights in the Narrative Feature section included Merzak Allouache's The Repentant, an incredibly engaging drama following a young freedom fighter as he attempts to renounce his past crimes and start a new life. Another favourite, Nabil Ayouch's Horses of God, follows young impoverished brothers in a Moroccoan slum, as they evolve from ambitious opportunists into radicalised suicide bombers. Both films had their world premieres at Cannes earlier this year and will likely get theatrical releases in a number of major markets.?

In the Documentary Feature section, Damien Ounouri's Fidai is the incredibly personal story of an ageing former FLN fighter in Algeria, who decades later, revisits the scenes of his numerous war crimes, and painfully reenacting some of the darkest moments from his past. Hanan Abdalla's In The Shadow of a Man, meanwhile, paints heart-rending portraits of four different Egyptian women, who all face incredible persecution and prejudice in their chosen life paths, due almost solely to their gender and marital status.

In the Arab Short Film Competition, the strongest entry was undoubtedly Sanctity, from Saudi?actress and filmmaker Ahd. The story of a young pregnant widow who is forced to completely reinvent her life if she is to protect herself and her unborn child yielded one of the best performances of the festival. Pitting Areej, her heroine, against two wildly different men, each of whom pose both a threat and a possible avenue of escape, Ahd does an incredible job of illustrating the complexities of modern living for Saudi women today. Beyond the compelling story, however, Sanctity is also directed with assured style and understanding for mood and aesthetics, while leaving the narrative with a tantalising open-ended finale.

Elsewhere in the festival programme I was able to catch the provocative documentary Valentino's Ghost, together with an extended post-screening discussion from the film's director, Michael Singh. A passionate, if entirely one-sided exploration, the film charts the changing depiction of Arabs in Hollywood and Western media. Back in the early days of Cinema, Rudolph Valentino was Hollywood's biggest star in a string of Sheik?films, in which the Arab was a symbol of exotic, sexualised heroism. Douglas Fairbanks continued this tradition in The Arabian Nights, but soon after, the Arab quickly became synonymous onscreen with the red indian - the unruly native who must be contained and conquered - after which their destiny was seemingly set in stone. By the mid-1990s, Arab terrorists were the go-to villain in Hollywood blockbusters, with everything from James Cameron's True Lies to Disney's Aladdin depicting Arabs as shifty, untrustworthy, fanatical and out for blood. There was a suggestion in the film's introduction that Valentino's Ghost would not be allowed to screen in the USA without some 30 minutes cut out of it. While Singh was anxious to suggest that the film's incendiary accusations, that a mostly Jewish-run film industry is conspiring to paint a negative view of Arabs, surely the film's heavy reliance on unlicensed clips from dozens of Hollywood movies proves the more realistic stumbling block.

The last section of the festival worth mentioning was the Made in Qatar showcase of rising talent within the tiny Gulf state. There is clearly a conscious effort being made by the Doha Film Institute to encourage filmmakers to widen their perspective and ambition beyond simply covering the subjects that proved so prevalent in the Arab Film Competition. Not to say that these areas are unimportant or pass?, but the emphasis here is on ensuring that Qatar builds a film industry that can endure, self-sustain and meet the needs and desires of an audience raised on blockbuster entertainment. In only it second year, Made in Qatar received more than 70 entries for this year's festival, made by Qatar-based filmmakers of 13 different nationalities.

My DTFF experience was bookended by two Made in Qatar features, starting with Mohammed Al-Ibrahim and Ahmed Al-Baker's zombie thriller, Lockdown: Red Moon Escape and closing up with music documentary Lyrics Revolt, from filmmakers Shannon Farhoud, Ashlene Ramadan, Melanie Fridgant and Rana Khaled Al Khatib. Both films display an infectous youthfulness and vitality, as well as praise-worthy technical competence behind the camera.?

Lockdown begins as a knockabout buddy comedy that sees two friends marooned in the desert after blowing a tire, only to be set upon by a horde of wandering undead. Our hero escapes with his life, but is picked up by the military and jailed, where he faces supernatural challenges of a wildly different nature. Lyrics Revolt, meanwhile, taps into the rebellious exuberance of the Arab hip-hop scene that evolved out of France and North Africa in the late-1980s to become the soundtrack of the Arab Spring movement. Artists from all over the region speak about their influences, musical mission and the importance of their message to today's Arab youth, and the film boasts an incredible soundtrack that deserves recognition on its own.

Beyond the cinemas and screening rooms of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, attending the festival gave me a brief but memorable chance to explore the booming desert metropolis of Doha. Fifteen years since my last, even shorter visit, the city is almost unrecognisable. My hotel, in the newly regentrified Souq Waqif, was perfectly positioned to give me a taste for the more traditional aspects of the city. While we learned that the market places and cobbled streets of the souq were actually only a couple of years old, one would be forgiven for thinking we had been transported back in time many decades, and the warm air remains rich with the scent of spices and tobacco smoke. The festival's press centre was located here, and proved an ideal location to meet our everyday needs. I have never savoured fruit juices as sweet as those available here, together with bountiful cups of coffee and incredibly strong local tea.?

Over the other side of town, however, at the Katara Cultural Village, the vibe was one of vivacious modernity. An eclectic barrage of skyscrapers litters West Bay, displaying an uproarious diversity of architectural styles that put Hong Kong's own expressive skyline to shame. For every newly constructed hotel or steely apartment complex were three more in various stages of construction. Doha is clearly a city desperate to evolve and compete with its neighbour, Dubai, to be one of the most economically aggressive cities in the region, if not the world. One can only hope that the people of Qatar are as enthusiastic to compete on an artistic level as they are on a purely economic one.?

The Doha Film Institute is primed and ready to lead and nurture a new generation of filmmakers, and hopefully together they can cultivate a vibrant domestic film industry worthy of sharing with the rest of the world. It has been an incredibly exciting and unique experience to get a glimpse of a film industry in such an early phase, and thanks to this inspiring and eye-opening opportunity awarded me by the Doha Film Institute and Doha Tribeca Film Festival, it's a region that now has my full attention. ?

My deepest thanks and acknowledgements to Doha Film Institute's Shamir Allibhai, Variety Arabia's Joseph Fahim and EatSleepLiveFilm's David Hall, whose insight and conversation helped inform this article.

M23, the eight-month-old rebel group made up of soldiers who defected from the Congolese army, has pushed beyond Goma, the bustling regional capital of eastern Congo, which fell to the fighters earlier this week.

AP photojournalist Jerome Delay is in the region covering the conflict, and has been witness to tens of thousands of civilians fleeing along a stretch of road to Goma, carrying mattresses and cooking pots on their heads, as well as live chickens, goats, and babies bundled on their backs. The town of Sake was nearly deserted.

Magnesium oxide: From Earth to super-Earth

    Friday, November 23, 2012

The mantles of Earth and other rocky planets are rich in magnesium and oxygen. Due to its simplicity, the mineral magnesium oxide is a good model for studying the nature of planetary interiors. New work from a team led by Carnegie's Stewart McWilliams studied how magnesium oxide behaves under the extreme conditions deep within planets and found evidence that alters our understanding of planetary evolution. It is published November 22 by Science Express.

Magnesium oxide is particularly resistant to changes when under intense pressures and temperatures. Theoretical predictions claim that it has just three unique states with different structures and properties present under planetary conditions: solid under ambient conditions (such as on the Earth's surface), liquid at high temperatures, and another structure of the solid at high pressure. The latter structure has never been observed in nature or in experiments.

McWilliams and his team observed magnesium oxide between pressures of about 3 million times normal atmospheric pressure (0.3 terapascals) to 14 million times atmospheric pressure (1.4 terapascals) and at temperatures reaching as high as 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (50,000 Kelvin), conditions that range from those at the center of our Earth to those of large exo-planet super-Earths. Their observations indicate substantial changes in molecular bonding as the magnesium oxide responds to these various conditions, including a transformation to a new high-pressure solid phase.

In fact, when melting, there are signs that magnesium oxide changes from an electrically insulating material like quartz (meaning that electrons do not flow easily) to a metal similar to iron (meaning that electrons do flow easily through the material).

Drawing from these and other recent observations, the team concluded that while magnesium oxide is solid and non-conductive under conditions found on Earth in the present day, the early Earth's magma ocean might have been able to generate a magnetic field. Likewise, the metallic, liquid phase of magnesium oxide can exist today in the deep mantles of super-Earth planets, as can the newly observed solid phase.

"Our findings blur the line between traditional definitions of mantle and core material and provide a path for understanding how young or hot planets can generate and sustain magnetic fields," McWilliams said.

"This pioneering study takes advantage of new laser techniques to explore the nature of the materials that comprise the wide array of planets being discovered outside of our Solar System," said Russell Hemley, director of Carnegie's Geophysical Laboratory. "These methods allow investigations of the behavior of these materials at pressures and temperatures never before explored experimentally."
